Should I Have a Shower For Second Baby?

January 30th, 2010

New parents need a lot to get started, and a baby shower is one of the best ways to help make that happen. It allows family and friends to show the mom-to-be how much love and support she has. For some people, holding a shower for a second baby was not considered proper, as the parents probably already had most of the items they needed. However, it is no longer improper to hold a shower for a second baby, as long as you make a few adjustments.

The shower could be a mini-shower focusing on those essential items that every baby needs, no matter how many older siblings – like diapers, undershirts, and bath accessories. You might ask mom and dad what items they still need and let the guests know. Another option is to make it a shower for mom instead of a shower for the baby, and ask the guests to bring items that mom will need and appreciate at the end of her pregnancy and shortly after the birth. You can give mom items to pamper herself with, but that are practical, as well, like 5-minute facial masks and leave-in conditioner.

It’s also a fun idea to have a shower where all the gifts are for mom – but are not related to being a mom, like a flirty nightdress or sexy nail polish (for when she can see her toes again!). The guests might choose to pool together to buy a gift certificate for something extravagant like a day for two at the spa or a fancy dinner – but be sure to include babysitting arrangements. Another idea is to have a planning meeting with dad and the guests before the party, in order to schedule days and times where help is likely to be needed, using a dry-erase calendar.

You might want to arrange for someone to clean house while mom and baby are still in the hospital, helping out with childcare or as a helper on errands or grocery day, or schedule transportation for the older child’s school and sports activities, especially the first week or so. The calendar can be revealed to the mom-to-be at the shower, along with all the names and phone numbers of the volunteers. Sometimes, both the baby and the mom have everything they need already. Or, consider having a simple party, featuring good food, music, and the mom’s loved ones.

An optional activity is to have guests purchase small baby items and then donate them to a local shelter or charity. Another idea for a second-baby shower is to hold a “freezer” party, with guests bringing food that can go in the freezer or else be easily stored. This will be of great help to the mom as she gets closer to her due date and during the first week or so after the birth. Obviously, you’ll want to check with mom to see if she has adequate room in her freezer for al the goodies, as well as select a party date close to her delivery date.

Lastly, it is acceptable to hold a full, as-if-it-were-the-first-baby shower in the case of a “caboose” baby – one who, as the name implies, is being born several years after the last child. Many moms and dads in this situation need to start all over again, as the big items might no longer meet safety guidelines – or may have been donated altogether.

And remember, even if the baby shower is a small one or doesn’t feature enormous gifts, the whole reason you are there is to simply show the mom that she and her new baby are cared for.

Barcode Scanners Now an Integral Part of Modern Commerce

January 30th, 2010

Barcodes are small symbolic patterns that relay information about the identity of a product. We tend not to notice how pervasive barcodes have become, but it was not always that way.

Early use of barcode scanners involved labeling railroad cars. But barcodes didn’t become part of our everyday life until they were adopted by supermarkets.|But the barcode’s true commercial niche was in automating supermarket checkout systems.}

Now, barcode scanning is implemented by the US Post Office, The Department of Defense, and just about every industrial application you can think of. In 1948 Bernard Silver began research into a system that could automatically read product information. Together with Joseph Woodland, the first workable system was developed using ultraviolet ink. Modifications to this system, developed by Woodland while he was at IBM were based on Morse Code.

What Woodland and his team did was to extend the dots and dashes of the code into narrow or wide vertical lines capable of being interpreted by a reader. The paper would then be passed in front of a photo cell and a bright light would be shone through the paper. Later, a bulls-eye pattern was used so that scanning would work in either direction.

At first, barcode scanning was unreliable and expensive as it required investments from large corporations willing to test the technology’s potential. It wasn’t until 1961 that The Boston and Maine Railroads tested the system on gravel cars. Right around the same time the idea was being discussed by the large grocery chains in the U.S.

It was the Kroger chain who first volunteered to test the RCA system based on the bulls-eye code. In 1969 another company, Computer Identics installed test systems in a Michigan GM plant and a New Jersey warehousing company. These initial tests clearly showed that barcode technology had broad application to a wide range of industries and commercial applications. However, almost from the beginning the most common application of the technology was in large retail situations such as grocery stores. It helps businesses to improve trade efficiency and as a result, the economy as a whole.

The Universal Product Code (UPC) became the barcode standard in the mid 1970s. This was an 11 digit code to identify any product, and since then, industry has not been the same. Barcodes really came into their with the development of the standard 11 digit UPC. The acceptance of barcode technology was assured with these developments, and since the early 1980s it has become virtually universally used throughout business and government.

Toyota Recall Rises

January 28th, 2010

The leading car manufacturer in the world has made a huge call back of some of their models in an effort to prevent accidents linked to faulty accelerator pedals.

The massive recall Toyota announced came on Tuesday 26th of January as some eight various sold Toyota models numbering more than 2 million have been revealed to have sticking gas pedals that causes the car to accelerate uncontrollably.

Among the Toyota models affected and placed on sales suspension are:

Corolla (2009-2010)
RAV4 (2009-2010)
Matrix (2009-2010)
Avalon (2005-2010)
Camry (2007-2010)
Highlander (2010)
Tundra (2007-2010)
Sequoia (2008-2010)

Not every Camry models have the problem with sticking accelerator pedal, specifically Camry Hybrids.  Toyota’s other car models such as the Yaris, Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Prius, etc. have also passed quality inspection.

In North America, six assembly plants have stopped production of these particular Toyota models.

Toyota’s reputation as a reliable car manufacturer has been smudged and this would also probably strain their profits for the first quarter of this year, if not the entire year.  In 2008, Toyota had surpassed General Motors Co. of America in terms of sales, placing them in the number one spot.  With this unexpected turn of event, however, the popular Japanese car manufacturer’s future sways on edge.

Toyota’s European market can also be subjected to a same recall since some parts of the gas pedals that are used in North America are also used on some Toyota models in Europe.  It is believed that only one supplier from the US was the only source of the defective part.

A previous incident in Japan back in 2006 concerning Toyota is also being linked to the recent recall.  The incident involved the Japanese government conducting a criminal investigation on Toyota due to several accidents that took place and being traced to manufacturing problems.  Although the company or someone from the company was never charged, this incident has come back to haunt the company in a certain way.

Following the recall, Toyota’s shares fell 4.3 percent.
In a previous statement, Toyota declared a forecast sale of 2.19 million cars in the US and Canada and above 8 million car sales worldwide for this year.  Due to this recent embarrassment, though, that sales forecast could dramatically plummet or could even cost Toyota huge in their sales profit.

Toyota’s current trouble related to its manufacturing is also being blamed on the growth plan which was organized by its previous president Katsuaki Watanabe.  The growth strategy involved increased and rapid production which is said to have contributed to poor quality control.  After 4 years as Toyota’s president Watanabe was replaced by Akio Toyoda, the grandson of the founder of Toyota.

There have already been reports from numerous safety firms that more than 2,000 incidents of sudden acceleration involving cars made by Toyota and at least six casualties were also reported.

Other than the recall, Toyota is still the leading manufacturer and seller of green technology in cars, specifically the Prius.

What is the significance of the belt in Martial Arts

January 28th, 2010

Martial arts belts are a common piece of equipment that serve a couple of purposes for the martial artist. From a practical standpoint, martial arts belts serve as something to hold your pants up and hold your uniform top in place. The way that a belt is tied can vary depending on the length of the belt and the tradition of the school in which you are practicing. Some schools do not use belts at all, or use a substitute. Sashes are a popular substitute and can serve the same purpose while giving the discipline a unique look.

The belt is more importantly used to show a student’s level of achievement. There are very few disciplines that do not use the white belt to signify a novice and a black belt to identify a master. This is where most agreements end. I have been to numerous schools and not one of them agrees upon meaning or the progression of colors, beyond white and black. Some schools even use multi-colored, or partially colored belts to show achievement.

Each tradition will have its own idea as to the color progression and significance of that color. While wearing the traditional karate uniform, one school that I attended for a short period of time, used the following idea for their belt progression:

White – New beginning. Without blemish. Pure

Yellow- Action. Beginning of movements.

Green- Life. The concepts of Martial arts starts to take life in the student.

Red- Heat. Refining their skills in the heat of training

Black- Mastery. Full development and maturity.

Most martial arts disciplines agree that the black belt is really just the beginning of understanding the art. Once a black belt is reached, the student has a true understanding of the meaning and fundamentals, but is only just starting their quest for mastery. As a matter of fact, mastery may never be achieved, but it is something to be strived for. As has been discussed, whether it is a belt of sash, one of the most basic pieces of almost all martial arts uniforms is the belt. Its use and meaning is quite important to the world to practitioners of almost every discipline.
